Academic Departments at Huntington-Surrey School

English

English is divided into two component parts at Huntington-Surrey: Composition and Literature.

The school's owner since 1978, Dr. Light German previously directed the University of Texas' undergraduate writing lab. She has developed a rigorous four-year curriculum that helps students learn how to write for college and beyond. Students learn the process of writing.

Literature is taught individually, with one teacher and one student reading and discussing works in a once-a-week tutorial-style class. Students and teachers collaborate to select works tailored to the student's interests and skill level. Students learn to read for a deeper understanding.

Math Teachers Steve and Ferris

Math

Students attend math class four days a week. Students learn at the their own pace and benefit from individual attention in small groups. Our math teachers ensure that each student "gets it" before moving on--truly, no child left behind. All math is done in class under the supervision of our math teachers, thus eliminating math homework.

History and Social Studies

Our History and Social Studies program emphasizes class participation and discussion of ideas in a seminar-style atmosphere. Current events play a large role in helping students gain a deeper and more personal understanding of their world. The curriculum includes World History, American History, Economics, Government, Psychology, and Sociology.

Science

Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, and Senior Co-Related Science are taught in a hands-on, exploratory style. Students learn experimental methods and are challenged to find their own answers and draw their own conclusions.

Foreign Languages

Huntington-Surrey offers Spanish, French, German, and Latin four days a week. Small language classes mean students have more opportunities to speak the language they are learning.

Students working diligently in Prep Class

Prep Class

Two days a week, students attend Composition, History, and Science classes consisting of labs, lectures, discussions, and other group learning activities. The assignments from these classes are completed in Prep Class. This allows students to complete most assignments on campus, thus drastically reducing homework (students are still expected to do their Literature and Foreign Language assignments at home). In addition to assisting students with their assignments, Prep teachers help students develop the organizational skills necessary to succeed in college.

Electives

Electives are offered on Fridays from 8:30 to 12:09. Course offerings vary by semester, but usually include courses such as Art, Intro to Philosophy, Guitar, Yearbook/Literary Magazine, Drama, Intro to Psychology, SAT Prep, Jewelry Making, Photography, History of Film, and Playwriting.

Students may also choose to earn their elective credits through off-campus activities such as dance, music, athletics, languages, or other interests. (For accreditation purposes, the student must provide documentation that the coach or instructor of such activities holds a college degree.)
